Honestly, wings in an air fryer toaster oven might be the best argument for owning one. I used to make wings in a regular oven and they’d come out fine — cooked through, a little crispy on a good day — but nothing like what you can pull off with the convection fan running and real heat circulating all the way around each piece. The skin gets crackly. The meat stays juicy. It takes maybe 35 minutes start to finish.
The technique here is pretty straightforward but there are a couple of things that actually matter. Drying the wings well before seasoning is non-negotiable — any surface moisture and you’re steaming them instead of crisping them. The other thing is baking powder in the dry rub, which I was skeptical about the first time I tried it. It works. It sounds like a baking ingredient and it is, but it also raises the pH of the chicken skin slightly, which speeds up browning and creates these little bubbles as it cooks. Crispier skin. That’s all you need to know. If you’re going to be making wings (or really any chicken) regularly, it’s worth having aluminum-free baking powder on hand — the regular kind works but can leave a faint metallic flavor on plain wings.
For the sauce I went with honey garlic because it’s what I reach for most often — a little sweet, a little salty, genuinely good. But these wings are flexible. Toss them in buffalo sauce, eat them plain with a dipping sauce on the side, or just squeeze some lemon over them. They don’t need much. If you want a setup that makes cleanup even easier, a nonstick air fryer basket insert is genuinely useful here — the wings lift off cleanly and you’re not scrubbing stuck-on skin out of the tray.
This recipe makes about 2 pounds of wings, which feeds 4 people as an appetizer or 2 very hungry people as dinner. No judgment either way.
Air Fryer Toaster Oven Chicken Wings (Extra Crispy, No Oil Spray Needed)
Genuinely crispy chicken wings made entirely in your air fryer toaster oven — no deep frying, no soggy skin, just crackly, golden wings with juicy meat inside. Toss them in your favorite sauce or eat them plain. Either way, they're really good.
Ingredients
Wings
Honey Garlic Sauce (optional but recommended)
To Serve
Instructions
Prep the Wings
-
Pat the wings completely dry with paper towels. I mean really dry — press hard and use multiple sheets if you need to. Moisture is the enemy of crispy skin, and this step matters more than almost anything else.
-
In a large bowl, toss the dried wings with the baking powder, kosher salt, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and black pepper. Make sure every piece is coated. The baking powder sounds weird but it genuinely changes the texture — it draws out moisture and helps the skin bubble up and crisp.
-
If you have time, let the coated wings sit uncovered in the fridge for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Even 20 minutes helps. If you're in a rush, skip it — they'll still be good, just not quite as crackly.
Air Fry the Wings
-
Preheat your air fryer toaster oven to 400°F on the Air Fry setting. Let it run for about 3 minutes so it's actually hot when the wings go in.
-
Arrange the wings in a single layer on the air fryer basket or rack. Don't crowd them — if you have to, do two batches. Overlapping wings steam each other and you'll end up with chewy skin, which defeats the whole point.
-
Air fry at 400°F for 25 minutes, flipping the wings over at the halfway mark (around 12-13 minutes). They should already look pretty golden at the flip.
-
After 25 minutes, crank the temperature up to 425°F and cook for another 8 to 10 minutes. This last blast is where the skin goes from just cooked to genuinely crispy. Watch them in the final few minutes — every appliance runs a little differently.
Make the Sauce (Optional)
-
While the wings finish cooking, combine the honey, soy sauce, minced garlic, and rice vinegar in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir and let it bubble gently for 2 to 3 minutes until slightly thickened. Pull it off the heat and stir in the sesame oil.
-
When the wings come out of the oven, toss them immediately in the sauce — or leave half plain if you've got people who want options. Top with scallions and sesame seeds and get them on the table fast.
Notes
The single most important step is drying the wings thoroughly before seasoning. Baking powder (not baking soda) is what gives you that restaurant-style crispy skin without any deep frying. Aluminum-free baking powder is worth tracking down — it doesn't leave a metallic aftertaste. If your toaster oven runs hot, check the wings a couple minutes early in that final blast. For plain buffalo-style wings, skip the honey garlic sauce and toss the finished wings in your favorite hot sauce mixed with a little melted butter instead. Leftovers reheat surprisingly well back in the air fryer at 375°F for 5-6 minutes.
