I’ll be honest — I was skeptical the first time I made burgers in my air fryer toaster oven. It seemed like a weird choice. But we were doing a rainy Tuesday dinner with no interest in firing up anything outdoors, and it genuinely worked better than I expected. The outside gets this slightly crisped crust from the circulating heat, and as long as you use the right beef (more on that below), the inside stays juicy.
The key thing with an air fryer toaster oven is that it runs hot and dry. That’s great for getting a sear, but it means you really do need 80/20 ground beef. The fat is what keeps everything from turning into a hockey puck. I tried 90/10 once. Never again.
This recipe keeps the seasoning simple on purpose. Garlic powder, smoked paprika, a little Worcestershire — nothing wild. It’s a burger. You want to taste beef, not a spice rack. The toppings are where you get to have opinions. I’m a mustard-and-raw-onion person myself, but the recipe includes the classics so you can go wherever you want with it.
You’ll also want a good instant-read thermometer if you don’t already have one. Air fryer cook times vary a bit between machines, and a thermometer takes the guesswork out completely. Aim for 155°F internal for medium-well, or 160°F if you want them fully cooked through.
Air Fryer Toaster Oven Burgers (Juicy, No Grill Required)
Perfectly juicy beef burgers cooked in your air fryer toaster oven — crispy outside, cooked-through inside, ready in under 20 minutes with zero grill cleanup.
Ingredients
Burgers
Toppings (customize as you like)
Instructions
-
Preheat your air fryer toaster oven to 375°F on the air fry setting. Let it run for at least 4-5 minutes so the basket or tray is genuinely hot before the patties go in — this is what gives you that nice sear.
-
Mix the ground beef with the salt, pepper, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and Worcestershire sauce. Use your hands, but don't overwork it. Overworked beef = tough burgers. Mix just until combined.
-
Divide into 4 equal portions (roughly 6 oz each) and shape into patties about 3/4-inch thick. Press a shallow dimple in the center of each one with your thumb — this keeps them from puffing up into little domes while they cook.
-
Place patties on the air fryer basket or on a lightly oiled wire rack set over the toaster oven tray. Don't crowd them. Air fry at 375°F for 6 minutes, then flip.
-
Cook another 6-8 minutes depending on thickness and how you like them done. For medium (pink center, 155°F internal), 6 minutes on the second side is usually right. For fully cooked through, go 8. An instant-read thermometer is your best friend here.
-
If you're adding cheese, lay a slice on each patty with about 90 seconds left. Close the door and let it melt. It goes fast.
-
While the burgers rest for 2 minutes (don't skip this), throw the split buns cut-side-up on the rack and toast for 2-3 minutes at the same temp. They get just enough color without getting hard.
-
Build your burgers and serve immediately. I like mayo on the bottom bun, mustard on top, tomato, lettuce, onion — but do whatever you want.
Notes
80/20 beef is non-negotiable for this method. The air fryer cooks fast and circulates heat aggressively — leaner beef just dries out. The dimple trick really does matter, don't skip it. If your patties are frozen, add 4-5 minutes total cook time and check with a thermometer. Leftovers reheat surprisingly well at 350°F air fry for 3-4 minutes. Don't microwave them, they get rubbery.
