Air Fryer Toaster Oven Hot Wings (Crispy, Saucy, No Deep Frying)

Crispy, saucy buffalo wings made start-to-finish in your air fryer toaster oven — no deep frying, no splatter, just seriously crunchy skin and bold flavor

Some nights you want wings and you don’t want to deal with a pot of oil or a full oven preheating for 20 minutes. That’s exactly when the air fryer toaster oven earns its counter space. I’ve made these probably a dozen times now, and they honestly hold up against anything I’ve had at a sports bar — maybe better, because the skin gets this almost papery crunch that deep frying doesn’t always deliver.

The setup is simple. Baking powder in the dry rub (not baking soda — different thing, important distinction), a real preheat, and a single layer on the rack. That’s basically the whole method. If you’re using a reliable air fryer toaster oven with a dedicated air fry setting, you’re going to get results that feel way more impressive than the effort involved.

For the sauce I go classic buffalo — Frank’s and butter, full stop. The little hit of honey is something I started doing about six months ago and now I can’t leave it out. It doesn’t make the wings sweet, it just takes the sharpest edge off the vinegar. You could absolutely go with a different sauce entirely: garlic parmesan, lemon pepper, honey sriracha. The wings themselves are just a vehicle.

One practical note: if you’re cooking for more than four people, you’ll want to work in batches. Crowding the basket is the single fastest way to end up with soft, steamed-tasting wings instead of crispy ones. It’s annoying to hear, but it’s true. A good air fryer basket rack with a little clearance around each piece makes a real difference in how the hot air circulates.

Instructions

Prep the Wings

  1. Pat the wings very dry with paper towels — and I mean really dry. Moisture is the enemy of crispy skin, so take an extra minute here.

  2. In a large bowl, toss the wings with the baking powder, salt, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and black pepper. Make sure every piece is well coated. The baking powder isn't a typo; it draws moisture out of the skin and helps it blister up in the heat.

  3. If you have time, let the coated wings sit uncovered in the fridge for 30 minutes (or even overnight). Totally optional, but you'll notice the difference.

Air Fry the Wings

  1. Preheat your air fryer toaster oven to 400°F on the air fry setting. Give it a full 5 minutes — preheating actually matters here.

  2. Arrange the wings in a single layer on the air fryer basket or rack. Don't stack them. If your oven is on the smaller side, do two batches rather than cramming everything in.

  3. Air fry at 400°F for 13 minutes, then flip each wing and cook for another 12 to 15 minutes. The skin should look deeply golden and you should hear a little sizzle. Internal temp needs to hit 165°F.

Make the Sauce and Finish

  1. While the wings finish cooking, whisk together the hot sauce, melted butter, honey, and garlic powder in a small bowl.

  2. Pull the wings out and toss them immediately in the buffalo sauce. All of them, right away — the heat helps the sauce cling.

  3. Serve with celery sticks and whatever dipping sauce you're into. Eat immediately. These do not wait well.

Notes

Baking powder (not baking soda) is non-negotiable for crispy skin — it changes the pH of the surface and helps it brown faster. Aluminum-free versions won't leave any odd taste. If your wings are on the larger side, add 3-4 minutes to the cook time and check with a thermometer. Want them even crispier? Skip the sauce toss and serve it on the side for dipping instead. Leftovers reheat well at 375°F for about 5-6 minutes — they come back crispier than you'd expect.
